Mikey Burton

Mikey Burton is a freelance designer illustrator based in the USA. He has been a designer illustrator for 10 years and has a masters degree from Kent State University in Ohio. His clients include Target, converse, The New York Times and many others.

Both the poster’s name and the date the poster was created is not stated, however it was designed for the Philadelphia book festival in 2011 and so the poster must of had been created in 2011 as well.

I have chosen this poster as an example because both the words and images are bright colours that makes the poster interesting to look at. The poster also shows words and images combined, the words have flowers growing out of the, there are also worms that are coming out of the words as well.

The poster was made for the 2011 Philadelphia book festival, to get people aware and interest them in the festival.

By the colours and images I can tell that the poster is for a younger audience because the designer uses bright colours to attract children’s attention and keep them interested in the poster, for example he uses a bright blue for the background, yellow, white and orange for the title. He also uses images of flowers and worms with faces on them which will interest children but not Adults.

In the poster there is a bright blue background, so that the views’ focus is not taken away from the main image. with a book opened and the name of the festival coming out of it,  The words are also bright colours and they have flowers coming out of the letters and buildings on top. The words also take up most of the space on the poster and are located in the middle, making it the focus point of the poster.

The images in the poster are small scaled compared to the words. The flowers in the poster which are the colours yellow, white and orange. There are also buildings ontop of the title, there are also worms with faces coming out of the title was well.

The fonts in the poster are plain and clear to read, this is so that children can read the text easily, as additional information in the poster have been put at the bottom in small writing. The images in the poster are very small compared to the words.

The colours in the poster are bright blue for the background, yellow, white and orange for the fonts. The fonts also have a dark brown outline, this is to make the words standout from the background because the background is a bright colour and the words are also bright colours and so they would not standout as much, as they would against a dark background. The flowers in the poster are also the same colour as the title.

The mood the poster gives is happy, this is because the artist has used bright colours which makes people feel happy. There are also worms with smiles, which also gives a happy mood.

The meaning of the poster is that things can grow from reading books, because the book looks like there is dirt on it, giving the impression that the words are growing out of the book and on top of the words there are buildings. there are also flowers growing from the words. This is suggesting that the poster is suggesting that reading will grow in to bigger things.

The most successful part of the work are the bright colours that are used because makes it hard for people to not notice the poster and the clear to read font because people will know the name of the festival.

What is unsuccessful about the work is that the flowers and the worms make it look like the poster is for children and so adults will not read it.

From this poster I have learnt to chosen the colours and images that will attract my target audience and to make the main information big and for additional information small so that it doesn’t take the focus away from the main image.

The part of the work i will take to improve my own are the texture for the letters and the clear big font so that everyone can read it properly.

Tim Lahan

PMF_main_800

Tim Lahan is an artist and illustrator who lives and works in New York, his works have a simple style. Lahan clients include Nike, the New York Times and pitchfork.

This design from Tim Lahan was made in 2013 for the Pitchfork Music Festival. The work is untitled.

I have chosen this poster as an example because the designer has used bright colours, which against the plain white background makes the images standout. There are also words and images combination, which is shown by the words being splattered in food and other things as well.

From the colours in the poster I can tell that the festival is a pop festival, which means that the target audience for this poster will be for people who like to go to pop festival. It is also for children as well because bright colors are used and so will attract their attention. The poster also looks like there is a food fight going on and so children will want to go, because they will find a food fight fun.

The meaning of the poster, is a food fight because it shows food being thrown in to the air, which again shows that the festival can also be for children because they will find a food fight fun and so will want to go.

The images that are shown in the poster are flowers, half eaten food and a bottle, all of which are brightly coloured.

The letters in the poster are black, which stands out from the white background and the colourful images. The letters are also at different levels and are different sizes, which makes the poster more interesting to look at.

The same of the letters and images are of the same size, however some images are bigger than the letters.

The letters in the poster are placed at different highs of each other. The images however are placed randomly across the page. There is also no focus point on the page or any part that draws your eyes more than the other.

If the words in the poster were to be removed, then the viewer will not known what the poster is for, however if the images were to be removed the viewer will know what the poster is for, but will not be attracted to the poster, because it will be black and white and not very interesting to look at.

The mood the poster gives is happy , this is because the designer has used bright colours, which makes people feel happy, however it wills a feel of disorganization, this is because there is no focus point and so you are always looking around. There is also no pattern, the images are placed randomly and the words are also different sizes.

The message I get from the words alone, is a poster for a music festival. The message I get from the images alone is a poster for a food fight.  Together they give the message of a food fight at a music festival.

The most successful part of the poster is that, the images are colourful and standout from the white background, making it interesting to look at.

What is unsuccessful about the poster is that, the different size fonts makes it hard to read also the poster does not say where the festival will be held, what time it will be or who are playing.

For my poster I will use the plain background and bright colours to make my work standout. What I will avoid is using font that makes it hard to read what the poster is saying.

Alex Trochut

Alex Trochut (born 1981) is a freelance graphic designer based in Barcelona. He has been working freelance since 2007. His clients include Pepsi, Wallpaper*, Audi and many others. He has also won awards for his work like the 58th Grammy awards nomination
for best recording packaging.

The name and date of this design is that mentioned. This design is for an advert for a shoe made by puma. The design was created digitally.

I have chosen this design to look at because I like the way the designer has used the image to create the title. I also like the colours that have been used.

The target audience for this design will be for sporty people, this is because the image is of a trainer and so it will be for people who like running or run a lot. Also the colours that were used suggest that the poster is for a teenager, this is because bright colours were used and so it will attract younger people however black was also used and which makes it look more mature.

The message of the design is that you should buy this trainer that was made in Berlin.

The image in the poster is of a brightly coloured trainer. On the trainer it has a yellow heart on the side and half a cat on the top. The words in the poster were formed by the shoe lace of the trainer, however the continues line to form the letters makes it hard to read.

The colours that were used for the poster were red, yellow and black, the plain white background makes these colours standout a lot.

The trainer takes up as much space as the words do in the poster, because both the image and the words is the same size. The focus point in the poster is the wording, this is because the words are red and so make you look at the words first, after looking at the poster you are then drawn to the trainer because it is also red.

If the words were removed from the poster it would still have the same meaning, because there is a trainer and so the viewer will know that the poster is about a trainer. If the image was to be removed then the viewer would think that the poster is of Berlin. Together the poster means that the shoes are from or sold in Berlin.

The poster makes you feel sporty, this is because the image is of a trainer and so makes you feel like doing sporty things.

The successful part of the poster is the idea of the image to create the wording.

The unsuccessful part of the poster was the font used because it made it hard to read that the word said.

The parts that I will use to improve my own work will be to use images to create words. The part that I will avoid will be to use fonts that makes it hard to read the words.

Tom Whalen

robot earth 3009 poster by strongstuff

Tom Whalen (born 1974) is an illustrator and designer from Pennsylvania. He has created illustrations for comic books, poster art, movies, pop art, toy packaging and other things as well. Whalen has a destitive style, his work is described by most as “modern vintage”. He works has been inspired by Saul Bass a  American graphic designer, Russian constructivist poster art, comic books and horror film posters.

The name of this illustration is called Robot Earth 3009, It was created in 2009. The design was made digitally.

I have chosen this example to look at for words and image combination because I like the way the designer has used the title to form the body of the robot, I also like the way he has added additional information, by writing it on the robots body.

The poster was designed as a way to show people how to use Photoshop to create illustrations. The client for this design would be anyone who wanted to learn how to create illustrations.

The poster is aimed at people who like Sci fi because the main image is of a robot and so if someone who likes sci fi sees the robot they will want to look at it. The poster is also for older audience, because neutral colours have been used, and so the poster will not hold young children attention, for they are attracted to bright colours.

The image in the poster is of a robot, in the background you can see a city that has been destroyed.

The words in the poster are different sizes, the main title has been made to look 3D, it has also been used as the body for the main image. Other information about the poster has been placed on the legs, shoulders and hands of the robot. The words are also clear to read.

The message of the poster is that a robot has destroyed a city, which means that the robot is evil and is going around killing things.

The colours that were used for both the words and the image are neutral colours, the part that isn’t a neutral colour is the head and arms.

The image is of a large scale taking up most of the space in the poster, the title is also of a large scale as well however other information about the poster has been made small, so that the attention isn’t drawn away from the main text and image.

The title is placed in the center of the poster making it the focus point, because the center will be the first thing you look at. The image takes up most of the space, which makes it hard to not see it.

If the words were to be removed from the poster it will still have the same message, which is that, it is about a robot. If the image was to be removed it will still have the same message that it is about a robot, because the title says “Robot Earth”.

The poster makes me feel like I should be scared, because the robot has been made to look huge and so could step on me. Also in the background there is a city that has been destroyed and so suggests that it is going around killing people.

The part that I feel is successful about the design is the way the designer has used the words to help make the image.

There is nothing that I can find that is unsuccessful about the design.

The parts that I will take to improve my own work would be to use words to help make my image.

Artem Sukhinin

Artem Sukhinin is a Russian graphic designer from Moscow and is currently based in London. His clients include Scout Magazine, Disney, WIRED and many more.

The name and date this design was created is not mentioned. This design was created for a Scout London cover.

I have chosen this design to look that because I like the way the designer has added texture to the words to turn them into images.

The audience for this poster would be for people who are hungry, this is because the poster shows a burger and so if a hungry person sees the poster they will want to have a burger.

The words in the poster have been made to look like images, like beef, cheese and ketchup.

The message that I get from this poster is that the burger is spicy, but that is all I can read because the font makes it hard to read what the words say and so the viewer will also not know that it says.

The designer used colours that look realistic, to make the viewer feel like it is right in front of them, also the words are bright colours and so standout from the white background. He has also used textures to make it feel realistic as well, like for the words he has used textures of beef, cheese and ketchup. For the bun he has used bread textures.

The burger itself takes up most of the space in the poster, however the words that up most of the burger. The woods are placed in the center of the poster making it the focus point.

If the words were to be removed, then the poster will just look like burger buns because the words make the images of the fillings in the burger. If the image was to be removed then to the viewer it would just look like beef, cheese and ketchup and not a burger.

When I look at this poster I feel hungry, this is because the main image is of a burger and it has been made to look realistic, making it feel like there is a burger in front of me.

The part that I feel is the most successful of the design is the way the designer has used textures to turn words into images.

The part that I feel that is unsuccessful is that the font makes it hard to read the words.

The parts that I will take to improve my own work would be to turn words into images, the part that i will avoid will be to use fonts that are hard to read.

Dance-Camp-Poster-2010-v103

The designer of this poster is unknown

The name and date the poster was create is unknown. This poster was designed for the dance project, to get more people interested in joining.

I have chosen this poster as an example because I like the way the designer has placed the words on top of the image.

The target audience for this poster is teenagers who are interested in dancing this is because the background for the poster bright blue to attract attention. It also shows a young person dancing and so other young people will want be like him.

In the poster it shows a young man dancing, there are also other images of people who are involved with the dance camp.

The words in the poster are placed on top of the image, they are different sizes and different fonts. part of the words have been cut off but you can still read them.

The message of this poster is that if you join the camp you will also be able to dance as good as the young man.

The colours that have be used are bright blue for the background. The image of the boy is in black and white, the words in the poster are mainly white but there are also some that are black as well.

The image of the boy takes up most of the poster. The images of other people have been paced at the bottom of the poster, this is so that the attention is that taken away from the main image. The writing on the boy is of different sizes. Because the boy is the largest images on the poster, and he has writing on him, more people are drawn to him, making him the focus point.

If the words were taken away from the poster then the viewer will think that the poster about dancing because the boy is dancing. If the images were taken away the message of the poster will be, that it is about dancing because the title is “Xtreme dance camp”.

When I look at this poster I feel like dancing because the boy is dancing.

The part that I find successful about the work is the way the designer has placed the words on top of the image.

The part that I find unsuccessful is the lack of colour in the poster, I doesn’t look interesting and so when people look at it they will not be that interested.

The part that I will take to improve my work would be to place words on top of my image, to make it more interesting.

The part that I will avoid will be to use only one colour and add more in to make it interesting.
