For this poster design I have printed the letters V and C very large I then placed images that you would associate with Cambridge, like the Cambridge tour bus and the round church on top of the letters. This combines words and images together because it look like the images are forming the letters.
In this design I used a light grey for the background because it is a subtle colour and so does not take away the attention from the main image which is the letters and the images, I also made the two letters black and the images white, this is because black and white are contrast colours and so the images that are white will stand out from the black letters.
The message that I was trying to show was that the images in the words, define Cambridge because all the imagery used to form the letters are all the things that you would associate with Cambridge and is what makes Cambridge the way it is.
This design was influenced by the designer Oscar Wilson, in his work he uses words to form images and so I came up with the idea of doing the opposite and used images to form words. I could make this link further to the artist’s work by making the images different colours which is what Wilson did in his work by making the words different colours.
What I would say is successful about this design is the fact that you can tell what each image is meant to show like the hand bag and the church, also this makes the letters look more interesting because they have images within them. What I would say is unsuccessful about the design is the lack of colour with in it, because I have only used 3 colours. I could improve this design by adding in more colours to the images so that they stand out more.
I would say that this idea does not really appeal to the target market because although I have used subtle colours and clear font so that people aged 35 and older will find it easier to read, there is not much imagery within the design that would appeal to the target market, for instance the shopping bag and bus would appeal more to younger people. To make this design appeal more to the target audience I could add in more historical images like museums and historical sites like the market.
I would say that this design does not meets the brief because although it combines words and images together, it does that have a strong typography element to it and it does that appeal that much to the target audience. To improve this I would add in the words “Visit Cambridge” at the bottom with a font that is both fancy yet easy to read.
