Final Evaluation

When I first got the brief, I was quite excited because I love cooking and so developing a logo, instructional manual and magazine spread that all evolve around cooking seemed like it would be really fun to do, I didn’t yet have any ideas on what I would like them to look like and so I looked at my research to help me come up with some. The part of the brief that I enjoyed the most doing was the illustrating part, especially with the spread, this is because it allowed me to draw and I like drawing so I found this to be the most fun part.

From my research I learnt that to make a successful illustration, it must be eye catching to attract the viewer’s attention and stand out from all of the other illustrations, it must help convey information to the audience, for example with the app designs I learnt that the illustration should tell the audience what the app is about, like if the app shows shoes it tells the audience that the app is about shoes.

The artists that helps influence me for my app icon was Kolopach, this is because their illustration taught me that my app should be able to show the audience what the app is about mu showing images that can be associated with the app, for example because it was a cooking app it showed a knife and tomato, which both items can be related to cooking and because I am also doing a cooking app I also used an image of a tomato as well as other objects to can be related to cooking to show people what the app is about. The designer Ramotion also helped influence my work because they made their app visually appealing and bright and colourful so that it stands out from the other apps and so within my design I used a bright blue background and bright and shiny objects to catch the audience’s attention.

The artist’s that helps influence my instructional illustration was Gemma Correll. In her design she made it look simple so that it would be easy to follow because it does not look complicated and so in my instructional I tried to make my instructions as sample as possible so that the audience will be able to understand what it is that the illustration is telling them to do. Another artist that I looked at was Felicita Sala, from their design I learnt that I should spread the images out across the page so that every part of the page looks interesting and for my instructional illustration I tried to spread the illustrations out as much as possible.

The artists that helped influence me for my magazine spread was the artist Mike Simpson, with in his work he blended the colours together to make the illustration look more real and life like and for my spread I wanted the drawings to look real as well to I also blended the colours together, so that it give the impression that the objects are right their in front of you. Another artist that I looked at was Yuta Onoda, within their work they made the illustration link with the title and so think gave me the idea to link my illustration to the title as well, because the man being interviewed in the spread is a chef that gave me the idea of drawing food that chefs would use like tomatoes and chilies.

I believe that the most successful part about my app design was the metal texture that I had created because it looks like it was real metal and it made the metal objects like the pot and knife stand out, it also drew more attention to the design because people are attracted to shiny things and the pots and knife look shiny. I would say that the least successful part would be the onion that I made, this is because the onion did not turn out the way that I hoped it would and it was hard to tell if it was even an onion.

I’m not that happy with the quality with the app because I think that there could of had been some improvements made, like the onion, I could of had made it look more like it was an onion and the tomato as well because the tomato was missing the green bit at the top and so did not look that much like a tomato, it looked more like a red ball.

I do believe that the final app icon that I created meets the brief this is because the app was meant to show crazy and was meant to tell people that this was a cooking app and I showed the audience that this was a cooking app by showing the pots and the tomato and chilly because these are all things that can be related to cooking. I also showed crazy, by making the cutleries and food fly all over the place, because it gives the sense of disorder and confusion. To make the design fit the brief more I could of had made the app look more crazy by mending the folk and knife.

I feel that the most successful part about about my instructional illustration is that it shows clear steps that the consumer would need to take in order to make the salami chocolate and just by looking at it without any words the consumer can tell what they need to do. The least successful part about this illustration is that because I had so much to draw in so little time, I had to rush some drawings and so some parts don’t look that professional drawn and it is hard to tell what some of the drawings are meant to be. Another thing that I think is unsuccessful about the drawing is that the page looks a bit overcrowded because there is so much stuff on the page.

I am not really that happy with the quality of the illustration because some of the drawings do not look that good because they have been rushed, like the chocolate salami at the end, I think that if I had more time I could of had made it look a lot better.

To improve the illustration, I could remove the arrows to make the illustration look less overcrowded, I could also make the illustration smaller so that I could spread them out some more because there is not a lot of space between each step and so the consumer might get confused and not know which step is which.

I believe that there are some parts of the brief that the illustration meets and some parts that it doesn’t meet. In the brief I was told that I must link the illustration to crazy cooking and so I came up with the idea of having a crazy recipe to show this crazy cooking and so I believe that I have meet that part of the brief. Another part of the brief is that I must show different ways of creating illustrations, by using Photoshop, illustrator, scanned in drawings and scanned in texture. I have used Photoshop to create the ingredients and equipment, I have also used illustrator to create the arrow and I scanned in paper texture in to Photoshop for the notebook. I thing that IO have not done however was scanned in drawings that I have done and so I have not fully met the brief.

I think that I could of had made my illustrator fit the brief even more by scanning in some drawings of food and scan it in to use for the background.

I feel that the most successful part about my magazine spread was the way that I had blended the colours together because it made the food look real like it is right there in front of you. I believe that the least successful part about my spread was that the blending that I did for the tomato because I did not add enough shading to the bottom and so it does not look as real like the others do.

I would say that apart from the tomato I am overall very happy with the quality of my work, because I like the layout that I have chosen and the food looks real which is what I wanted.

I think to improve the magazine I could of had added in more things other than food like cutlery and other equipment that chefs use, like a chef hat so that it could further link to the title, because the interview is about a chef and so showing the chef hat would tell people that Dan Lovellbray is a chef by the hat.

I believe that the magazine spread meets some of the brief but not all of it. One of the things that the brief told me to do was show crazy cooking  within my design and I done this by showing a  crazy recipe idea, like the fried twinkly. I also used Photoshop to create the food and I added in texture in the design for the background, however there are two things that I did not do and that is use illustrator and scan in drawings.

To make the illustration fit more with the brief I could of had used illustrator to create shapes, like the shape of the tomato and the chilly.

Throughout the project the tools and prepossess that I used the most was the pen tool in illustrator, which I used a lot to help make the shape of the foods and equipment. However the tool and process that I like the most was the paint brush tool in Photoshop because I could use it to blend in the colours so that the food looked more realistic and I enjoy blending colours in and seeing have it can go from looking like a 2d image to a 3d image from blending.

From this project I have learnt that I should use images that convey information to the audience as well as tell the audience what to expect. Like how I used crazy images to show the audience that there will be crazy cooking within the app.

Magazine Spread

For the magazine spread I decide to create it in Photoshop, this is because I want my illustrations to look as real as possible and so I will need to do a lot of blending and Photoshop is the best software to blend colours together.

For my magazine spread I wanted a texture for the background so that it would look more interesting than just plan white I also wanted the background to link with cooking and so I came up with the idea of using a chopping board for the background. At first I used pictures that I have taken of my own chopping boards however they did not fit the look that I wanted and so I used an image off line instead. The link to the website of where I got the image from is below the picture.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.08.10.png

After I had downloaded the image of the chopping board, I opened up Photoshop and created a new A3 document. The document however was portrait and I needed landscape because it is meant to be a double page spread of a magazine and so I went to the top and clicked on image, then image rotate, 90% and the page rotated to landscape. I then placed the image of the chopping board on the page and used the move tool to resize the image to fit on the page. After that was done I then created a new layer and used the pen tool to draw a plan of how I want the design to look and to give me an idea of how to lay things out as well as what scale they should be.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.08.16.png

https://www.itsnature.org/plant_life/vegetation-plants/chili-pepper/

The first thing that I drew was a chilly pepper, this is because in my plan I wanted different kinds of ingredients and food to be spread around the page to fill up the space. I got this image from a website, the link to the website is below the picture.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 14.57.26.png

The first thing that I did was create 3 new layers, one for the colour, one for the bright areas and one for the dark areas. I did this so that if I mess one layer up I would not have to start all over again. I also found out that it is best to only have 3 different shades of colours otherwise it will get to complicated and 3 different shades is all that I needed to blend the colours together to make the design look realistic. I first started by drawing the colours in to each layer, like drawing all of the red colour in the colour layer and all of the dark shades in the dark area layer and all of the light colours in the light area layer. I will continue to do this till there is no white spaces left and it is just different shades of red.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.00.41.png

Here I have finished colouring in all of the dark, and light ares, there are still some white ares but they do not matter because when I start blending they will disappear.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.01.41.png

After a while I thought that the light ares were way to light and so therefore would make it difficult to blend it in with the red and so I decided to change the colour to a darker shade.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.03.27.png

Here I have finished making the light area darker, all I have to do now is blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.06.56.png

Here I have started to blend the colours together as can be seen from the top part of the chilly. To bleand the colours togthe I first change the hardness of the brush from 100% to 0%. I then change the brush’s opacity to 30%. I then use the eyedropper tool to copy the base colour or the normal colour, then switch back to the paint brush tool and paint over the dark and light areas, the colours should look like they have been mixed together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-22 at 12.38.37.png

In this screen shot I have fully blended the colours together, I think that this illustration is quite successful because it looks quite realistic which is the look that I was going for.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.08.27.png

After I had finished blending the colours I placed the chilly on top of the chopping board.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.08.33.png

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/558737/Guide-make-perfect-cup-of-tea

The next drawing that I am going to do will be a cup o tea. The link to where I got this photo is below the picture.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.11.41.png

I first started by creating 3 layers, like I did with the other drawing that I did. The base colour layer, the light shade layer and the dark layer. I then used the eyedropper and copied the colours of the tea.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.11.47.png

Here I have drawn an outline of where each shade should go, so that when I fill in the colour I will know which shade goes where.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.14.20.png

In this screen shot I have filled in all of the outlines with the colours, all that I have to do now is blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.19.44.png

This screen shot shows the colours that have been blended together, to do this I used the same technique that I did to blend the colours for the chilly together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.22.24.png

Now that I have blended the colours for the tea together all that I need to do now is make the mug for the tea. This screen shot shows that I have used a base colour for the mug, this is so that I can get the shape of the mug.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.25.04.png

After I had done the base colour, I created a new layer called light and for this layer I will paint all of the light ares that are on the mug and so I used the eyedropper and selected the lightest colour on the mug I then used the paint brush to paint in all of the light areas.Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.26.25.png

After I had done the light areas the next thing that I need to do is do the darker areas and so I created a new layer and called it dark areas and used the eyedropper to select the lightest darker colour on the mug and used the paint brush to paint the dark areas on the mug.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.34.15.png

After I had placed on the colours I selected all of the layers and merged them together, I did this because it would be easier to blend the colours when they are on the same layer. I then turned the opacity now to 30% and the hardness down to 0% and copied the base colour then started to blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.35.28.png

After I had finished blending the colours together, I placed the final image of the mug on the layer above the plan. The plan said that the tea should be placed in this spot and some I placed it there. I would say that I am very happy with the way that the tea has turned out because it looks very realistic, like it is a real cup of tea.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.41.12.png

https://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-image-single-tomato-view-top-image7346286

The next food that my plan said I should draw was a tomato, because I only have cherry tomatoes in my fridge I had to get an image of one off line. The link to the website that I got it from is located above. Here I have created 2 new layers, one layer for the light areds and one layer for the dark areas. For the light areas I used the paint tool and painted over the light areas of the tomato, I then did a slimier thing with the dark areas and painted over them with a dark colour.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.55.10.png

The next thing that I did use used the eye dropper tool to select a base colour from the tomato, I then created a new layer and draw an outline all around the tomato. This is so that I can use the paint bucket to fill in the outline meaning that I will not have to waste time colouring in the outline.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 15.59.54.png

This is what the tomato looks like after I had filled in the base colour and the shading, all that I need to do now is blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 16.05.57.png

Here is what the tomato looks like after it has been blended together. I would say that compared to all of the other illustrations that I have done this is the least successful, this is because the tomato does not look that realistic like the other illustrations that I have done, this is probably because there is not enough dark shading on the tomato. I think that this could of had been made better if I had more shading around the bottom of the tomato.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.08.50.png

After I was done I placed the tomato on the layer above the chopping board texture.

https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/top-down-view-red-tomato-soup-70549510

The next image that the plan said that I have to draw was a bowl of soup, but because I did not have a tin soup in my house, I took an image offline. The link to where I got the image is below the picture.

Inline image 3

I first started off my creating a new layer, I called this layer sauce because this layer was the layer where I drew the white sauce in the soup. After I had created a new layer I used the eye dropper to copy the colour of the sauce, I the went on the image layer and turned the opacity doesn’t to 80%, this is so that I can draw on top of the image and know where I have already placed the colour because if it was on full opacity I would not be able to tell. I the used the paint brush tool and painted over the white sauce.

Inline image 4

Here I have created a new layer called leaf, and I colouered the whole of the left green, I then bought up the colour palette and changed the colour to a darker green and coloured around the edge of the leaf. I then brought up the colour palette again and changed the green to a lighter colour of green and painted in the centre of the leaf, I then turned the opacity doesn’t of the paint brush and started to blend all of the colours in.

Inline image 5

I the created a new layer and placed in below all of the other layers, I did this to that I can use a bigger brush and I don,t have to be careful not to go over the other layers because it is placed below them and so it would to show up. I then needed a base colour and so I used the eye dropper and copied the colour of the soup and used the paint brush to paint over the soup.

Inline image 1

The next thing that I needed to do was create another layer, this time for the dark areas of the soup ans so I used the eye dropper to copy a darker colour to the base colour and started to paint over all of the dark araes in the soup.

Inline image 2

I the merge these two layers together so that it would be easier to blend the colours on one layer, also having just one layer would make it less complicated because I already have so many layers and it is hard to tell which layer is which and so having less layers would make things less difficult.

Inline image 8

This is what the soup looks like after I have blended all of the colours together. I would say that the final design does not look that bad however it could look better, may be if I add in some high lights to the soup.

Inline image 9

After I was done with the illustration I placed in on top of the chopping board where the plan told be to place it.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.09.31.png

The next illustration that I had to draw was a plate and so I uploaded an image of a plate that I had taken onto Photoshop.

Inline image 1

After I had uploaded the photo I created a new layer, I then used the eye dropper to copy the colour of the plate, I then used the paint brush tool to paint on top of the plate.

Inline image 2

After I had finished painting the base layer I then created 2 more different layers, one for high lights and one for the shading. I the used the paint brush tool to paint on the high lights and shading on the plate. I would say that I am not very happy with the way that the plate has turned out because it does not look that realistic, I think that this is because I have not blended in the high lights very well with the base colour.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.09.37.png

After I had finished with the plate I placed it on top of the chopping board layer.

Screen Shot 2017-05-22 at 12.41.24.png

https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/sweet-basil-herb-tied-bunch-twine-2535737

The next drawing that I planned on drawing was a herb, this is because herbs are mainly used in cooking. Because I only have dried herbs in my house and I want to show fresh ones I downloaded an image off line the link to the website that I got the image is below the picture.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.10.15.png

I first started by creating a new layer, then using the eye dropper I copied the colour of the basil and painted on top of it to use it as a base colour.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.10.20.png

I the created another layer called high lights and used the eye dropper to copy the high lights of the plant and used that colour to paint in the high lights.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.10.27.png

The next thing that I had to do was the shading and so just like what I did for the high lights, I created a new layer called shading and used the eye dropper to copy the colour of the shading of the plant, I then used the paint brush to paint in the shaded parts of the plant.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.10.35.png

After I had done both the high lights and the shading I then moved onto the blending and so I turned the opacity down to 30% and changed the brush colour to the base colour and started to blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.10.44.png

The next thing that I had to do was the stem of the plant, I first started off by using a base colour and painted on top of the stems.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.10.49.png

The next thing that I did was create a new layer call stem light and I painted in the high light areas of the stem.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.02.png

After I had done the highlights I then moved on to do the dark areas of the stem and so I created a new layer and used the paint brush to paint in the dark parts of the plant.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.12.png

After I had done the stem I then moved on to draw the string that ties the basil together. Like all my other illustration I started off with a base colour I then created a new layer and drew on top of the string.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.31.png

After I had done the base colour I then used the paint brush tool to paint in the highlights and the shading of the string.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.37.png

After I had painted in the high lights, the next thing that I need to do was blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.43.png

When I looked at the centre of the plant it didn’t look right for some reason and so I decided that it might be the colour and so I changed the colour to a darker green however that still did not look right.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.49.png

I then came up with the idea of using the same colours that I used for the leaves, so that the centre looks like there is a leaf there and I have found that it looks a lot better than it did before. Overall this was the most difficult part to do because there were so many leaves and I had to paint all of them in, this illustration also took me the longest to do however I would also say that this piece is the most successful compare to all of the other illustrations that I have done.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.11.57.png

After I had finished the illustration of the plant I placed in on the layer above the chopping board layer.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.12.25.png

The next thing that a planned on drawing was a bar of chocolate and so I uploaded a photo that I could of a bar of chocolate on to Photoshop.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.12.29.png

The first thing that I did like always was create a new layer and used the eye dropper to copy the base colour from the image and then use the paint brush tool to paint over the image of the chocolate bar.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.12.39.png

After I had done the base colour I then moved on to doing the highlights and shading and so I created two new layers, like always, one for the highlights and one for the shading and I used the paint tool to paint over the highlights and the shading.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.12.45.png

After I had finished painting I then moved onto blending the colours together. I would say that I am pretty pleased with the way the chocolate bars looks because you can tell that it is a chocolate bar, which is what I wanted.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.13.12.png

The next and last food that I was going to draw was a fried twinkly. I decided to draw this because the them is meant to be crazy recipes and fried twinkly is an unusual recipe. Because I have not got any twinkles at home that I can take a photo of  I got an image of one off line the link to the website that I got it from is placed below the image.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.13.22.png

The first thing that I did was create a layer and painted over the image of the twinkly with a base colour.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.13.40.png

I the painted in the highlights and the shading on the twinkly.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.13.53.png

Afterwards I turned the opacity down on the paint brush and started to blend the colours together.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.14.01.png

After I had finished the twinkly I the moved on to make the sauce on the twinkly and so I created a new layer called base sauce, and used the eye dropper to copy the colour of the sauce and paint over the top of the sauce.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.14.18.png

I then added in the highlights and shading and blended all of the colours together. The design turned out a lot better than I thought that it would and I really like how realistic the twinkly and the sauce look.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.14.21.png

After I had finished the illustration of the twinkly I then placed it on the layer above the chopping board layer.

Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 13.14.29.png

Now that I have finished the illustration all that I had left to do was the writing part.I placed the title of the spread at the left. I then went on a website that creates random text and copied and paste the text on the spread, I did this so that it lots like there is writing, like you would have on a real spread. I would say that I am happy with the way that the spread looks however it could be better in some places, overall I would say that it looks pretty good.

Instructional Illustration

Chocolate Salami

For my instructional illustration I had to show the theme crazy within my design, I did this by having a crazy recipe to show the idea of crazy to the audience and so I looked for the most crazy recipe that I could find and I came across a recipe called chocolate salami which I thought sounded really bazaar and crazy and so I decided to use this recipe.

Grand_Marnier_Orange_Liqueur__Cognac_1311679.jpg

http://limit-man.ru/zubrovka/kapitan-morgan-pryanyy-zolotoy-kupit.html

One of the ingredients that I needed to draw for the chocolate salami was a bottle of Grand Marnier and so I downloaded an image off line, the link to where I got the image is located below the image. I downloaded the image instead of taking a picture myself because I don’t have a bottle of this drink in my house and it would of had been expenses to buy.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 11.58.54.png

After I had downloaded the image I uploaded the image to PhotoShop, I then clicked on create new layer and called it “label”, this will be the layer where I will be drawing the labels. I then went back to the image layer and changed the opacity  down to 80%, this is so that it would be easier to draw on top of the image.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.05.18.png

After I had changed the opacity, I then went on the layer called “label” and clicked on the eye dropper and clicked on the letters of the label, this is so that when I start drawing the label the colour would be the same as the colour of the bottle. I then got the wacon and started drawing on top of the letters of the label.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.17.05.png

Once I had finished drawing the letters I then went on to drawing the border of the label. This is what it looks like after I had finished the border.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.19.04.png

After I had finished the border I then used the eye dropper to copy the colour of the background of the label and used the bucket tool to place the colour in which was a lot quicker than using the paint tool to paint the colour in. There is what the label looked like after I had finished. I missed a few things from the label as well like a few words below the name of the bottle and the image of a lion and horse holding a shield above the name, I chose to do this because it felt like it was not needed because when I am  done with this drawing I am going to shrink it down and so it would be hard for the viewer to read what the little words are saying and so I thought that there would be no point having them in.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.32.43.png

Once I had finished with the label the next part that I had to do was the bottle and so I started from the top and work my way down. I created a new layer called “lid”  and like I did for the label, I used the eye dropper to copy the dark colour of the lid, I then used the paint tool to paint over the dark parts of the lid.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.36.53.png

After I had done that I then used the eye dropper again to copy the lighter colour of the lid and used the paint tool to paint in the lighter colour of the lid. I did the exact same thing for the really light part of the lid where the light is shining off of it.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.46.05.png

I then moved on to doing the the label right below the lid and just like what I did with the lid I used the eye dropper to copy the light and dark colours of the label and used the paint tool to paint over the light and dark colours. I also started colouring in the dark part of the main bottle body.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 13.01.25.png

After I had done the label below the lid I then went on to drawing the neck of the bottle, using the eye dropper to copy the colours of the bottle and the paint tool to paint in the colours.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 13.17.10.png

I then moved on to doing the ribbon part of the bottle and used the eye dropper to copy the main colour of the ribbon and used the paint tool to paint in the colour o the ribbon.

After I had drawn all of the ingredients and equipment, the next thing that I needed to do was place them all on one page and so I opened up Photoshop and opened up a new a3 page.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.29.40.png

I then changed the colour of the page from white was that the background will look more interesting then just a white page.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.30.24.png

I wanted a way to show the audience what ingredients they will need and how much and so I came up with this idea of showing a notebook with everything that they will need on it and so I scanned in an image of a blank page of my notebook and placed the image onto the page.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.30.54.png

The next thing that I need was type up all of the ingredients that is needed and how much on each line of the scanned page, I did this to make it seem like the words were written on the page. I also tried to use a hand writing type font to again make it seem like the words were written on the page.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.31.13.png

After I was done with the notebook page, I moved onto placing the image on to the page.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.33.17.png

After I had placed on all of the images for the steps, I then numbered all of the images, this is so that the viewer would know what image shows which step they should take next.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.33.56.png

I then typed up what each step shows and what the viewer must do for each step, this is so that they will understand what is going on for each image and what they must do.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.34.15.png

I thought that the instructions that I typed up looked a bit boring and didn’t really standout a lot and so I used the shape tool located at the left of the screen and used it to place a box behind each of the instructions. This way the words standout a little more from the background.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.34.33.png

The next thing that I did was insert arrows, this is so that the viewer would know what steps they will need to take after they had finished the step that they are on. However I did think that this is unnecessary because I had already numbered the steps and so I was thinking about taking it out, but the arrows made the design look more interesting and so I left them in.

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.34.45.png

After I had finished with the steps, I then placed in the title so that the viewer will know what it is that the instructions are telling them to make.

I thought that

Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 15.28.29.png

App Icon

Before I could start developing my cooking app, I first had to find out how to make the background for the app. I wanted the app to look professional and if the background was just a plain colour like white or black, it would not look very professional or appealing and I want the app to stand out from all the others and so i have to make the background look really good.

YouTube Video

Because I did not know how to make an app background, I searched YouTube for a video tutorial that could show me how to make an app in illustrator when I came across this video above. I found that the video was simple and I understood everything that the man said and so I thought that this would be a great tutorial for me. I also like the way the app looks in the video, it is very bright and exciting and would appeal to a lot of people as well as grab their attention. I decided to use illustrator instead of Photoshop because illustrator is designed to create illustrations, Photoshop is pixel based and so if I create a logo with it, the logo can not be enlarged or manipulated in the same way that an illustrator based logo can and so this would be the perfect software to use.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.04.52.png

The first thing that I did was open up illustrator, where a plank canvas was shown.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.04.16.png

I then clicked on the word “file” located at the top, then the word “new” and this window came up. This window is to allow me to create a new document. In the video it said that the page that I will be designing the app on should be 5 inches wide and 5 inches high, this is because most apps are squares and so my app should also be a square. I also changed the name of the new document to “App Icon” so that I would be able to find it after I have closed the window or I would have to stat all over again if I can’t find it. After I was done selecting the size of the page that I will be working on, I then clicked on the word “ok”.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.04.29.png

After I had clicked on the word “OK” this page came up. This will be the page that I will be working on creating my logo.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.05.23.png

The video then said that I should create a square in the centre of the page and so I went to the rectangle tool located at the left hand side, I then held down the “shift” key, this is so that the rectangle remains a square when I draw it because it would be hard making a perfect square by eye.

The video then said that the square needs to be black and so I changed the fill at the bottom left of the screen to black so that I have some colour inside that I can work with. I also changed the stroke to have no colour inside of it, this is because I do not want the app to have any outlines because most of the professional looking apps that I have looked at for my research do not have any outlines either and so if I don’t add any outlines then my app will also look professional.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.05.50.png

This is what the square looked like after I had changed the fill and stroke.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.06.39.png

The next thing that the video told me to do was made the edges of the square more rounded, which is also the same thing that professional looking apps do, to make the app look more interesting than just having a normal square. To do this I first went to the word “effect” that is located at the top of the screen. I then went now to the word “stylize”  and then to “Round Corners”.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.07.00.png

After I had clicked on “Round Corners” this window popped up. This window allowed me to round the edges as much as I want, I could make them only a little round or so round to the point that it looks like a circle, there was also a preview, so that I could see what it would look like. The video said that the radius should be 0.5 inches and so I typed in 0.5 in the window, then clicked on the word “Ok”.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.07.24.png

The video then said that I need to add a gradient to the black and so I went to the bottom left and clicked on the fill, I then clicked on the gradient button that is located in the middle of the fill and the no fill.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.07.29.png

This is what the square looks like after I had appealed the gradient to it. The colour goes from white at the beginning then it slowly changes to the colour black.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.07.39.png

The video then told me to change the type from Linear to Radial.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.08.39.png

After I had changed the type from linear to Radial, I found that the gradient changed, instead of going from a colour to one side then change in to a different colour when it gets to the other side, all the colour around the edge is black but the closer it gets to the middle the light the colour becomes. When I saw this I was not to sure about, because the black looked very dark and it did not look like the black was blending very well with the white and so I thought that if I placed some colour in the square then there would be very dark areas around the edges.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.16.23.png

The video the told me to change the colours of the gradient so that instead of going from black to white it will go from a dark blue to a lighter blue. For this I just clicked on the white colour and this window came up showing the colour palette and I chose the lighter colour blue, I then clicked on the black and chose the darker colour of blue.  I could of had chosen any colours that I wanted but I decided to stick with the blue because I thought that it would make the app standout from more and I think that blue works really well for the background.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.16.48.png

This is what the background looks like after I had done everything that the video said, however I did miss out the last part which showed me how to make it look like there is light before the objects in the background, however I thought that this would not be needed and I am going to have a lot of objects in the app and so it might make the app look a bit over crowned. I was worried that the dark blue might turn out too dark and it would look like the colours have not blended well like the black and white however it look like the dark blue and light blue have blended well, which I am very happy about.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.38.28.png

The next thing that I had to do was add in the objects. I decide to draw a chopping knife this is because a chopping knife is used to chop up ingredients for cooking and so showing this knife will let people know that the app is a cooking app. I uploaded one of my own photos that I have taken onto illustrator.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.38.54.png

I then turned the opacity of the photo down to 49%, this is so that it would be easier to draw around the knife, otherwise it would be hard to see the lines.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.39.09.png

I then went to the left hand side of the page and chose the pen tool, this is so that I would be able to draw around the photo and form a shape, that I can add colour to.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.40.04.png

After I had selected the pen tool, I clicked on the top part of the knife so that a dot would form, I then moved down the knife and clicked again so that a line would connect the two dots however this time I held down the mouse button so that I would be able to bend the line so that it looks like the line is curving, this is so that the lines to look straight and it looks like the lines bend and curve to fit the shape of the object. There was one problem however the previous colour that I set for the background remained, this made it hard to place the dots.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.41.35.png

I managed to get rid of the colour by replacing the fill with no fill so that there will be no colour and so that it would be easier to place the dots.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.41.39.png

Here is what the dots and lines look like without the fill, it is a lot easier to see the dots and lines and I can see the image behind a lot more clearly because the colour was covering the image up, which meant I did not know where to place the image next.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.53.00.png

Here is what the dots and lines look like after I had worked my way around the knife, the next thing that I had to do was add in for colour to make it look more like a knife.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 14.54.36.png

I decided to add the metal texture by placing another texture on top by using another image, however I did not liked the way that the texture looked because it did not look like a metal texture and so I went online and looked for videos to could show me how to make the texture.

As I was searching for videos I can across this video that shows how to add metal textures to objects, although the video is for Photoshop, as a watched I found that I could still use this video because illustrator has the same features as Photoshop.

20170427_061741.jpg

I decide to try this texture out on an image of of pot first just to see what it would look like. Here is an image of a pot that I have taken a photo of, I have decided to include an image of a pot within the logo design because pots are used for cooking and so this will let people know that the app is for cooking.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.04.35.png

To get the shape of the pot I did the same thing that I did with the knife and used the pen tool to draw around it to get the shape of the pot.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 14.59.59.png

I tried the colour out on the handle to see what it would look like. To make this texture all I had to do was use the same gradient tool that I used to make the background, however this time I added more colours, this means that the colours don’t just go from light gray to dark grey, but to light grey then to dark grey and back to light and you can even see on this texture how I made it go from light to dark then light and back to dark. I would say that I really like the way that this texture turned out because it really does look like metal and it looks realistic, I would say that this metal texture would be the most successful feature within the logo design because of how real and professional it looks.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.11.46.png

I then proceeded to do the rest of the pot. The best part about the gradient is that it allowed be to save the texture and so after I had used the pen tool all I would need to do is click on the fill, add a fill then go the the gradient section and chose the gradient that I had save and it will change the colour to the metal texture. This was great because it meant that I did not have to start all over again each time to make the medial texture, it also meant that I did not have to waste time.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.21.10.png

This is what the pot looks like after it has been placed against the background. I have placed the pot at the bottom of the logo because I want to show ingredients being tossed into the pot, I want to show this because it would link with cooking because it will show ingredients being tossed in to make a meal, which would again show the audience that the app is for cooking.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 12.58.45.png

After I had finished the pot I then decided to move onto the knife and finish adding in the metal textures to it. I had noticed that there were also metal parts on the handle of the knife as well.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 13.01.57.png

And so I decided to use the pen tool to draw shapes around the metal parts so that I can also add metal textures to them as well. I actually found this part quite hard, this is because the circle were really small and it was hard to make a perfect circle and so every time that I had messed up I would have to delete that dot and start again.

Inline image 4

Here is what the knife looks like with the metal texture on the handle.

Inline image 3

I then added the metal texture to the end of the knife, I also had to make the handle texture, for this I used the same texture for the metal texture, but this time I changed it from grey to black so that it matches the colour of the handle.

Inline image 2

After I had finished with the knife I moved onto making a folk. I decided to use an image of a folk within my design because foods are used to eat food and so this will let the viewer know that the app will be about something that they can eat. To make this folk I used the same technique that I did for the knife and used the pen tool to draw around the folk to create the fork shape, I then placed on the metal texture, to show that the folk is metal.

20170427_062131.jpg

Because my logo so far only shows equipment and not any ingredients hat you can eat I decided to add in an image of an onion to help balance this out.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.30.20.png

I used the pen tool to draw around the onion to get it’s shape, I then placed a gradient on top of it and changed the colours to match the colours of the onion.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.54.07.png

Because the onion has many layers, I had to make many rings inside of the onion to show these layers.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.54.32.png

After a while it was getting hard to add in more of those rings because I was running out of space on the gradient bar, as can be seen from the image above.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 15.54.23.png

However after experimenting a little bit I found out that I can make the bar longer and so I could add on more rings to the onion.

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 16.02.52.png

This is what the final image of the onion looks like. I would say that this illustration is probably one of the most unsuccessful because it is hard to tell what the illustration is meant to be of because it doesn’t really look like an onion. I think that the illustration turn out so bad because the colours needed to be better blended, which was something that I could not do with the gradient tool. I think that it would of had looked better if I had done the drawing in Photoshop first then upload it to illustrator.

Inline image 5

The next ingredient that I decided to add was a tomato, I used the same actions that I did for the onion, only this time I changed the colour to red to match the colour of the tomato. There is something that I didn’t like about the tomato and that was that the top part with the leaf is missing, this is because the tomato that I took the photo of didn’t have the top part. For me this makes it hard to tell what the tomato is meant to be.

http://sciencenordic.com/body-sensor-reacts-chili-and-chilly

I thought that I should add in one more veg to fill up the space and so I got this image of the chilly offline because I could not find any chilies in my fridge that I could take a photo of the. The link of the website where I got the image from is below the image.

Inline image 4

For this image I first used the pen tool to draw around the top part of the chilly.

Inline image 3

I then used the gradient tool to added in the colour to the top part of the chilly, however I changed the colour to green to fit the colour of the chilly.

Inline image 1

I then used the pen tool to draw around the body of the chilly.

Inline image 2

Just like for the top part of the chilly I used the gradient tool to add in some colour to the chilly, I also changed it to the colour red so that it matches the colour of the chilly.

Screen Shot 2017-05-22 at 13.43.40.png

Here is what the final logo looks like. One of the things that the brief said that I had to do was create the app to invoke the theme crazy cooking and so I thought that I would show this theme by making the equipment and ingredients fly from the sky into a pot, this is to give off the feeling of chaos and things being crazy and out of control. Also cutleries are flying into the pot as well, this also shows the theme crazy because the things falling into the pot are meant to be things that you can eat, however you can’t eat metal and so would you have to be crazy to try to eat them.

Scenario

Experimental celebrity chef ‘Dan Lovell-Bray’ is releasing a new cookbook entitled ‘Crazy in the Kitchen.’ Along with the launch of the new book, he is also launching a cooking app, a range of ready meals and is giving an interview to BBC Good Food magazine.

Lovell- Bray is looking to commission an illustrator/graphic designer to design many aspects of these projects.

As that Designer you will need to design and illustrate the following:

  • An instructional illustration, illustrating the steps of one of his recipes from the cookbook.
  • A double page spread for BBC Good Food magazine that uses illustration to suggest his experimental ‘crazy’ style of cooking.
  • Either an illustrated app icon for his app ‘Crazy Cooking’ or a piece of illustrated packaging for his ready meal line entitled ‘Dan Lovell-Bray’s Crazy at Home’

Lovell-Bray insists that the designer use a mixture of techniques within each illustration to suggest his mixed and hap hazard style of cooking. Each design should include elements of:

  • Photoshop Wacom drawing
  • Scanned traditional drawing media (e.g. fine liner, pencil)
  • Scanned textures
  • Illustrator shapes and pen tool

Each illustration must evoke the ‘crazy’ style of his cooking and must fit its purpose and context

When I first read the brief I thought that, that this unit would be very fun to do, this is because I love crafts and making things and so I was really excited. I didn’t yet have any initial ideas this is because there were son may ideas that came to mind, that I couldn’t yet from them into proper ideas.

The part that I enjoyed the most about the brief is creating the cards, because it allowed me to be creative and think in different and different ways to make my cards more interesting.

For my research I looked at a range of different types of card, like birthday cards, baby cards, sympathy cards and Valentine’s cards. From this research I learnt different card types use media in different ways in order to convey their ideas and meaning, for example if there was a birthday cards and it wanted to show  happiness then it would use bright colours, different media can also be used to evoke different emotions, like a soft material like cotton would evoke a happy emotion, unlike a hard material, like rough paper.

Throughout the project I used a range of different materials and media, I few that I have used would be, felt, cotton, glitter paint, coloured card and ribbons. I made sure that I used these materials safely by writing down the sort of dangers that could occur and find solutions to these problems, like if I was using bleach I would find a way to use it safely like wearing gloves and glasses.

The material that I enjoyed using the most was the cotton, this is because it is soft and when I felt it, it felt relaxing and gave off a happy feeling. I don’t think that there was a materials that I did not enjoy using however I did find the bleach the hardest to use because if I was not careful and I got it on my clothes it would not come at and so I had to be really cautions.

A few of the ideas that I came up with, where I used materials and techniques in creative ways, are for one card I wanted to allow the user to interact with the birthday card and so I used coloured card to form a lever which was attached to a piece of yellow card and the flames of the candles in the card were cut out, the user could pull or push the card lever down or up, so that it looks like the flames of the card is lighting up and down. For another card I wanted to represent death for a sympathy card and so I got a flower from my garden and glued it to the card so that over time the flower would die, which signifies the death of the loved one. And for a baby card I wanted to give the blanket in the card some texture and so I used cotton, which signifies the softness and comfort the baby is feeling in the blanket.

I would say that my most successful experiment would be the final piece for my birthday card, this is because I used materials to show the texture of the objects on the card, for example the object was meant to be a cup cake and so I showed the soft spongy texture of a cake, by using actual sponge and it not just feel like a cake but it also looked like one as well. I would say that the least successful experiment that I produced would be the bleach drawings, this is because I am not use to using bleach, I also could not make my drawings as detailed and the bleach would sometimes mix in with the water, which would make the work look messy.

For the final outcome for my sympathy, I used a range of media. One of the medias that I used was glue, I used this media because I wanted to show sadness, and one of the ways to do this is by making it look like it is raining, because people associate the rain with sadness because it looks like tears and I found out that if you drip pva glue onto a piece of paper, when it drys it look like rain drops and so I dripped glue over my card to make it look like it is raining to convey the feeling of sadness. Another material that I used was a flower that I found in my garden, I wanted to show something that symbolizes death and so I came up with the idea of having a flower stuck to the card because over time the flower will start to die and so this symbolizes death because the flower is dying.

I also used a range of media and materials within the final outcome for my birthday card. For my birthday card I used a sponge, this is because I wanted to show a birthday cup cake, but I wanted it to look and feel like the real thing and because cakes are known for being spongy, I came up with the idea of using an actual sponge, so that it seems like a real cake has been stuck to the card, I also used a cup cake case, which I cut in half and placed it on top of the sponge, I did this because I wanted to make the sponge look more like a cup cake and placing the cup cake case on top make it look more realistic.

The media and materials that, I used for the final outcome for my valentines card, was mainly card, this is because I wanted to a materials that I can shape and that will how it’s shape, because I wanted to make an arrow, I also wanted something that can help move the arrow along into the heart and I found that coloured card was the best at shaping and I was able to roll it up to form the base of the arrow, the card was also quite think and so I could glue the arrow to it and people can move the arrow along my move the card. I also used red glitter paint, with in my design as well, this is because the glitter made the red parts of the card stand out a lot more, this also means it in a shop the card would also stand out a lot more than the other cards and it more likely to catch people’s attention.

For the final outcome for my baby card, the media and materials that, I used was felt, I used this because, within the design I wanted to show baby clothes and baby clothes are known for being soft and so I wanted a material that could also signify this softness and felt is known for being quite soft and so I thought that it would be the right material to use. I also used other materials for the clothing, like ribbons, this is because most baby clothes have ribbons on them because it is meant to be cute and so I thought that added the ribbon would also make the clothes seem more like real baby clothes, it also made them look more interesting and appeal. I also did the same for the lace, by adding it on to certain parts of the clothing, to again make it feel and look more like real baby clothes.

I believe that all the media that I used for my final outcomes was the right choice this is because because they all fitted their purpose, for example the purpose for the glue for my sympathy outcome was too make it look like it was raining and I would say that, it achieved it’s purpose.

I would say that the successful part for my baby and birthday outcomes was the materials that I used to mimic the feel and look of objects, to make it seem more real, for example for my birthday card, I used a sponge to mimic the feel and look of a real cup cake and for my baby card I used felt to mimic the look and feel of real baby clothes. I would say that the successful part about my valentine’s and sympathy cards is the way in which they used visuals to symbolize, like in my sympathy card it showed a drying flower, which symbolizes death and in my valentine’s card I showed a heart, which symbolizes love.

What I think needs to be improved for all of my final outcomes apart from my sympathy card, is the background, this is because most of the time the background was left plain and only had a single black colour. I could of had added in a pattern in the backgrounds of these cards like what I had done for my sympathy card to make it look more exciting.

The research that I have done links to the way I have used visuals language, because in the research I learnt that

What I believe was most successful about my use of visual language in my final cards, was that they all shown objects of which can be associated with the theme, for example for my birthday card, I showed an image of a birthday cake and birthday cakes are associated with birthdays and for my Valentine’s Day card I showed a love heart and love hearts are associated with Valentine’s Day and so just by looking at the card, you already know what the card is meant to be for.

What could be improved on with my use of visual language in my final cards is that I didn’t add in a lot of words, with in my designs, for example my final baby card only had the words “baby girl” and on my birthday card it only had “happy birthday” I believe that I should of had added more words, that link with the visuals, to make it more interesting, like I could of had put “happy birthday here is a cake for you” that way it also links with the visuals.

From this project I have learnt a number of things, for example how to use media and materials to evoke different emotions, like using soft material like cotton, to evoke calm and happy emotions. I have also learnt how other visual elements can evoke different emotions as well, like colour bright colours suggest happy emotions and dark colours suggest unhappy emotions. I believe that in my future works, this will help me with deciding on which materials and visual elements I should use to evoke certain emotions, giving a bigger impact on the viewer and making it more interesting, than for the design to simply look nice.

Final Poster Resubmission

This is what the original rough poster design looked like.

final-poster-idea

This is what my piece looked like before the resubmission.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.17.20.png

I thought that the rough design needed more colour and so I placed the original image of the Fitzwilliam museum into illustrator, I then clicked on image trace, then 3 colours and I was given the same image back but in 3 colours only. I chose to have only 3 colours because if it was to colourful then, it would not appeal as much to the target market. I also made sure that the colours would appeal to the target market as well, by choosing subtle colours that are not too in you face.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.17.30.png

The next thing that I did was carve the letters that spell out “visit” in the colums, like what I did in the original. To do this I placed the outline onto of the 3 colour image, then created a new layer and used the paint tool to paint in the letters, at the same time I used the outline to help guild me so that  know what the letters should look like.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.17.54.png

The next thing that I did was add in names of places that people can visit in the background, like what I did in my refined poster idea 2. However this time I made the text smaller, so that I can add in more names of places, I also changed the font, to a Script typefaces, this is because it looks like hand writing and gives the design more of a classy feel, which would appeal to the target market because they are aged 35 and older and so they would prefer classy looking places to visit. This also lets them know of the other places they can go to in Cambridge. The text in the background also makes the background look less bare and makes the image stand out more. I also changed the colour of that it fits will the colour palette of the poster.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.18.37.png

I needed a place to add in the tagline and so I used the same idea for my refined poster idea 3 and painted over the top part of the museum, so that it looks like a flat surface. I then placed the tagline ” Relaxing day out?” in the space that I painted over, in I light brown so that it stands out from the darker brown. I also used a script typeface for this text as well, because it gives the design a classy feel and makes it look professional. I also changed the colour of the logo and the web address. I changed the colour of the logo so that it fits the colour scheme of the rest of the poster and I changed the web address white so that it stands out from the rest of the brown shades.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.18.47.png

The tagline looked a bit plain and so I copied the text onto a new layer and made the text a darker shade of brown and placed in behind the original text, so that it looks like the tagline is casting a shadow. To only does this make the text more interesting, but it also makes it seem like the tagline is a physical object because it is casting a shadow.

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 12.58.07.pngScreen Shot 2017-03-28 at 13.01.02.pngScreen Shot 2017-03-28 at 13.03.38.pngScreen Shot 2017-03-28 at 13.10.12.png

The original type face that I used did not look that exciting and so I tried out a number of different type faces, till I found one that look interesting and more noticeable because the previous one did not attract that much attention. I even explored different colours that I can use. In the last typeface, I changed the colour to white to see if it will make the text stand out more and I found that the white stands out from the brown shades and so I decided to keep the text white.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.12.12.png

This is the font that I decided to keep for the final design. I chose this font because it is more noticeable than all the other fonts. I also chose this font because I wanted to give the design a traditional feel because it is meant to appeal to people who like historical days out and so a traditional looking font would appeal to them and so I wanted a Serif Typeface, because Serif typefaces are used to look professional and traditional. Also one of the artists that I looked at Pablo Picasso, used Serif typefaces within his work, The Scallop Shell: ‘Notre Avenir est dans l’Air, which was made in 1912 and so this shows that this is a traditional type face because it has been used all the way back in 1912.

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 12.12.23.png

Even though I used a font that stands out and I changed the colour to white, the text was still not that noticeable and so I decide to place a white boarder behind the word “Cambridge ” so that more attention is drawn to the word, it also makes the decide look more professional and it shows that the word “Cambridge” is important.

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 15.00.54.png

I found that the letters for the word Visit was kind of hard to see and the target audience are meant to be aged 35 and older and older people find it harder to see and so they may find it difficult to read the letters. To solve this I drew a brown outline around the letters so that they are easier to see and the viewer would not have to get really close just to read it.

Having looked at my poster again, I have found that the font and colour works a lot better now and it looks more professional.

Personal Research

Card number 1:

Image result for interactive cards

The materials that have been used with in the card are:

  • coloured card
  • water paint
  • string

This card gives the feeling of freedom this is because it shows a plane in the sky and the sky is meant to be a big open space with no restrictions, also it says that the sky is the limit, this phase is used to say that there is no limit to what you can do.

This card also uses bright colours this gives off the feeling of happiness because bright colours are usually used to show someone who is happy and full of colour. This design also allows the user to interact with the card, this makes the card seem way more fun because you can actually play with it.

I would say that this card is very effective in conveying it’s intended message, this is because the message is meant to be that there is no limitations to what the person can do and this is shown through the image of the sky.

From this card I have gotten the idea of making my card so that people can interact with it as well making it seem like way more fun and interesting than just any normal card where you can only look at it.

Card number 2:

The materials that have been used with in the card are:

  • Different types of flowers
  • parcel note
  • Orange string

From this card I get the feeling of love and joy, this is because there are flowers within the card and flowers are normally given to people that the person loves or cares for deeply and there are many different kinds which shows that they really love that person.

There are also a lot of bright colours used within the card, like the colour purple and orange this shows joy because lots of colours have always been used to show when someone is joyful or happy.

From this card I have gotten the idea of using real flowers within my cards as well to make it more visual appealing.

Card number 3

The media and materials that have been used for this card are:

  • Different coloured ink
  • purple and white card

From looking at this card I get the feeling of happiness and joy, this is because the cards have been cut out to form balloons and balloons are only used for parties and parties are meant to be fun and joyful. The designer has also gave the card a 3D feel because the balloons and been cut out of card and placed on, which gives it more of a 3D feel and makes it more appealing to look at.

There are also other visual elements that give off the feeling of joy, for example the colours that have been used. The artist has used a large range of different bright colours and bright colours usually give off the feeling of happiness.

I would say that this card is quite effective at expressing it’s intended meaning because from looking at the card I think that the meaning for this card is that parties are what brightens up people’s lives. This card expresses this meaning my showing balloons which symbolizes parties and making them colourful, while the background is left plain white, which symbolizes a boring life.

From this card I will take away the idea of placing colourful objects and materials against a plain background to make the objects standout more. It has also given me the idea of using colours to tell a story.

The materials that have been used in this card are:

  • brown card
  • different patterned cards
  • String
  • white card
  • ink pens
  • googly eyes

The media and materials that have been used for this card gives off the feeling of happiness, this is because the patterned cards have been cut out to form the shape of flowers and colourful flowers are meant to be a symbol of happiness.

There are also other visual elements that give off the feeling of happiness, like the colours that have been used, there are 3 main colours that the designer has used and that is yellow, green and pink, all of which are bright colours that suggest happy feelings.

I do not believe that is card is very effective in telling it;s intended meaning this is because when I look at the card I do not see any message or meanings that it is trying to convey to the audience, I believe that the card has no meaning to express and has just been made to look pretty.

From looking at this card I have been given the idea of also using patterns within my card, I will probably use patterns for the background of the card, to make the background look interesting as well.

Thomas Lawrence “The Calmady Children” 1823 (emotions of innocence and youth)

sir-thomas-lawrence-the-calmady-children-1347909854_b.jpg

The media that the artist used to create this piece is oil paint on canvas. The feeling and the emotions that the oil paint portrays is the feeling of joy. The media evokes this feeling because oil paints give off a vibrant and bright colour and people associate vibrant and bright colours with happy feelings and joy.

The artist has also used elements of visual language to convey meaning and emotions, for example he has used colour to suggest meaning. Both of the girls within the painting are wearing white. White is normally used to show innocents and children are mostly thought to be innocent and pure and so the colour can be used to represent their soul.

I would say that the artwork uses materials, techniques and processes to communicate it’s meaning is very effective because it is using colour to show it’s meaning and so with just one look you can tell what’s the painting is trying to say.

This painting has given me the idea of using dark and light coloured media to send a message to the viewer, for example I will use dark toned media to send a sad and depressing message and bright media to send a happy and joyful message, like what the artist has done for the girls in the artwork.
